$300/year (temporarily discounted from $500) is way too much for "advanced hobby use". I think $50/year or $100/major version is my limit for hobby software. The guy in the original story has been using Autodesk for 30+ years and is currently on a "Free" license. I guess the generation which refuses to pay for other's work is Generation X? As a Gen Xer, I don't appreciate that generalization. Yeah, because the people that wrote the software aren't worthy to be paid for their skills. Reduce design cycle errors. Workflow inefficiencies. Track every change and prevent conflicts with automated, built-in version management. Extend the CAM capabilities of Fusion 360 with more advanced manufacturing technologies, including 5-axis programming, toolpath optimization, process automation, on-machine verification, and more. Take models from other CAD programs, even in the original format, and use them directly in Fusion 360 to collaborate with your students.
I absolutely adore being able to program my solid modelling instead of selecting, pushing, pulling, stretching, prodding, whatevering some shape that’s different for every CAD suite. Also, I know you’re trolling, but it’s not about it being hard, it’s just a very convoluted way of modelling. Try modelling autocad linea something beyond the basics of project boxes and the like and let us know how that goes. And, yeah, I’ve worked with the freecad defaults since 0.14 and never even considered that there might be any appearance options. If I remember the only restriction is interoperability with the commercial software. No CAM, but everything else I needed up until now is there. Usability is not the best but in comparison to other alternatives in terms of features and pricing it’s the best deal for me.

Most of what I make ends up being OpenSCAD. I mostly use OpenSCAD to design parts, and FreeCAD to design assemblies and integrate parts into existing things. Autodesk is about the last company that builds software on the backs of personal/hobbyists/small business market.
