SolidWorks has a low cost version for students and veterans, but has the same issues as SolidEdge. It has a large active community of highly proficient users though. Fusion360 is arguably the best choice because it has great features, is easy to use, and have the best community support. I believe parts designed during the free licenses can be used if you switch to a paid license without any issues. The risk is that Autodesk changes its license again. I'm just a hobbyist. I don't make any money from my hobby. I'm also not rich, but I think the cost is reasonable. They're offering subscriptions/licenses at 40% off right now and I just purchased a 3-year subscription for $801, which works out to about $24/month USD. The annual commercial license is only $80 Canadian a month as I write this, that's hobby money for many of us. If you are using it commercially and your company can't afford this, your company is not long for this world. I've used Fusion 360 for years now, and the only other 3D software I've used is Solidworks but it's so expensive they won't even list the price online.
There is no doubt that there is room for improvement to the new user experience in my eyes. This is such a BASED take. I dont get it at all. I downloaded freecad installer for windows, during installation it asked me installation folder, and asked me to have short cut option on desktop to launch and add start menu folder. I use both depending on what I need. The complexity of the model. Downsized from my company, so I lost SW and started learning Fusion with the plan of doing freelance, because I could afford and justify the annual cost. Free, very similar workflow to fusion, works locally . Has some limitations and seems to be no longer updated (only the paid version - SpaceClaim is), but hey - it's actually free alternative. As an advanced hobby user, who has access to commercial equipment it's a terrific value free or paid. The user interface is well done, with CV splines you can closely approximate G3 surfaces if you need them.
This is like if the free version of MSVC only allowed 10 documents across all projects. Sure it'll let you include any number of read-only files, but there's very few programmers that would want to work with that product if a maximum of 10 editable source files ever. The main thing that bugs me is the "10 active documents at a time" bit.
Stuff I design makes up 0.01% of my income, but because almost nothing I sell is designed by me or 3D printed, I'm past that 100k income level. I can tell you my colleagues who had lots of Solidworks experience picked up Fusion in no time. 90% of the skill translates, and the biggest difference are the interface and some of the more specialized tools/features. The features you are missing compared to the paid version are really only something you will need as a pro-level user. There are some things that are annoying such as the 10 active files limit, but nothing that is a killer.
